McDonnell Douglas F-15 EagleFor more than two decades the F-15 Eagle was widely acknowledged as the world's greatest fighter. Conceived in the days before low observable technology (stealth) was considered important, it was designed to out fly and outfight not only its contemporaries, but the next generation of Soviet fighters too. It's thrust/weight ratio exceeding unity enabled it to remove itself vertically from the fur ball, as anyone will attest who has experienced the chest-vibrating thunder of its twin turbofans during a "Viking" takeoff: pulling into a vertical climb straight from the runway. Combine with moderate wing loading; this gave the F-15 a previously unmatched agility. This was combined with new and very sophisticated radar the APG-63, a multi-mode combining long range detection with excellent combat capability. A ground-breaking innovation to keep pilot workload to manageable proportion was Hands on Throttles and Stick (HOTAS), in which all controls needed for critical flight conditions, notably combat and landings, were positioned where the pilot could reach them without moving his hands from the main controls. The gestation period of the F-15 coincided with a time of galloping inflation, with the result that even the USAF could not acquire it in the numbers needed. This naturally restricted the export market, and to date only Israel, Japan and Saudi Arabia have been able to afford it; Israel of course deemed it essential at any price. The Israelis were first to use it in combat, followed by the Saudis against Iran. Not until the Gulf War of 1991 did the USAF take its greatest fighter into action. At the design stage, the motto was: "Not a pound for air to ground!" This is ironic when one considers that the latest variant, the F-15E, is a two-seater configured for the delivery of air-to-surface ordinance. This concept was proven in the Gulf War. Alarmed by the air combat capability of the F-15, the former Soviet Union had developed a counter; the Su-27 Flanker. After a false start, this became a rival for the title of the greatest; whether it is or not will hopefully never be known. One thing is certain: the combat record of the F-15 will be hard to beat.
